Likely Reef Tank Suitable
Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable
Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Philippines to New Caledonia, north to Yaeyama Island, and south to the Great Barrier Reef.
Size: 3 inches (9 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabits burrows in muddy bottom areas on inshore bays and lagoons and usually found at depths between 10 –85 feet (3 – 25 m) where it feeds by sifting mouthfuls of sand to capture small invertebrates and organic matter.
General Husbandry: Occasionally seen in the trade, and having a whitish body with several narrow reddish lines from the snout lengthwise.
Best maintained in well-established fish-only or reef aquariums, possibly with filamentous algae growths, and wide-open sandy areas along with some small rubble and rocky crevices to hide when needing to do so.
Should not be housed with aggressive or fin-nipping fishes, such as groupers, dottybacks, triggerfishes or angelfishes, as this is a shy species that prefers to hover above the sand bed watching for its next meal to come close enough to capture, occasionally sifting the sand for organic matter/tiny invertebrates or eating available algae growths.
As to diet, should be fed a diet of finely chopped fresh or frozen meaty foods, e.g., krill, marine fish flesh, mysis shrimp, shrimp, scallops, squid, clams and algae containing foods, especially Spirulina, and be fed twice daily.
If difficult to get feeding, try live adult fortified brine shrimp and black worms (Lumbriculus variegatus).
