Range: Eastern Indian Ocean: Cocos-Keeling and Christmas Islands. Pacific Ocean: All islands of Oceania except Hawaii and Easter Island.
Size: 11 inches (28 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabits exposed reef fronts and outer reef slopes and is usually found at depths between 3 – 65 feet (1 – 20 m) where it feeds on small fishes and crustaceans.
General Husbandry: Has two color phases; a pale greyish white with a horizontal white band and a similar marked maroon to black phase, both with numerous dark dots. Not collected for the trade.
