Neomeris

Neomeris annulata

Dickie 1874

Fuzzy Tip, Spindleweed, Finger Algae

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.

Natural Environment: Inhabits intertidal rocky areas.

Aquarium Suitability: This is a calcareous, aragonite containing green alga that is difficult to eradicate in the wild as it contains a mixture of terpenes, e.g., brominated sesquiterpenes, which are located in its thallus tips. Therefore, except for some nibbling by parrotfish in the wild, its not eaten by other fishes.

Nevertheless, quite nice looking and in my aquariums did well, yet requires high alkalinity and calcium levels and very bright light to maintain.

Potential Control Species: Urchins: Diadema setosum and Mespilia globulus

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Chlorophyta

    Class: Ulvophyceae

    Order: Dasycladales

    Family: Dasycladaceae

    Genus: Neomeris
