Penicillus

Penicillus dumetosus

(J.V.Lamouroux) Blainville 1830

Neptune's Shaving Brush

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: South Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean.

Natural Environment: Inhabits shallow, warm bays and lagoons, where it may form large colonies or be mixed with seagrasses.

Aquarium Suitability: Prefers sandy bottom areas and intense light. Its upright stalks are short lived however, maybe lasting only a few weeks. Yet new growths will occur within a short distance of the main stalk via runners from the disintegrating central stalk. May grow up to a few inches per day and is a good water quality indicator. Similar to P. capitatus , but the stalk is shorter and the head larger and looser. Its also not as calcified.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Chlorophyta

    Class: Ulvophyceae

    Order: Bryopsidales

    Family: Udoteaceae

    Genus: Penicillus

FYI: Also called the Shaving Brush because it has a thick stalk crowned with a tuft of green to white filaments.
