Udotea

Udotea flabellum

(J. Ellis & Solander) M.A. Howe

Mermaid

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: Caribbean.

Natural Environment: Inhabits shallow sandy and muddy areas in lagoons and bays, and often found in seagrass beds.

Aquarium Suitability: A somewhat pretty species, and sometimes available in the trade, and if so can attain a 12 inch (30 cm) height and needs bright light and gentle currents, and slightly raised calcium and alkalinity levels. I've not heard any good comments about maintaining this species for any length of time, and it may be one that is better left in the wild.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Chlorophyta

    Class: Ulvophyceae

    Order: Bryopsidales

    Family: Udoteaceae

    Genus: Udotea
