Halymenia

Halymenia floridana

J.Agardh, 1892

Florida Red Macro

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Western Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of Mexico.

Natural Environment: Inhabits mostly shallow protected and shady tidal areas where little current exists and grows in dense tufts.

General Husbandry: A very pretty, yet delicate growth and seems to be quite eatable as some tangs and angelfish seem to like its taste. Also seems to be susceptible to iodine levels in the aquarium, as without minor additions of this element, my specimen seemed to be less colorful and began to dissipate. A wonderful addition to any reef aquarium, yet proves to be difficult to maintain for the long term.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Rhodophyta

    Class: Florideophyceae

    Order: Halymeniales

    Family: Halymeniaceae

    Genus: Halymenia
