Scinaia

Scinaia complanata

(F.S.Collins) A.D.Cotton, 1907

Red Finger Algae

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Western Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and also the Indian Ocean.

Natural Environment: Forms clumps and found attached to shells, coral fragments, and stones in clear subtidal waters.

General Husbandry: An extremely attractive alga that is somewhat gelatinous and also quite fragile, as any mishandling will cause it to fall apart. Can look to be in perfect condition one day, and the next totally dissipated. May require iodine additions to remain healthy. A species well worth experimenting with!

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Rhodophyta

    Class: Florideophyceae

    Order: Nemaliales

    Family: Scinalaceae

    Genus: Scinaia
