Real Reef Rock

Family Gorgoniidae

Leptogorgia miniata

(Milne-Edwards & Haime, 1857)

Carmine Sea Spray, Sea Whip

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: Florida, Caribbean, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, and reported to occur in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Natural Environment: Inhabits coastal areas.

Aquarium Suitability: Not purposely collected for the trade, however, the specimen in the photo came from the Gulf of Mexico where it was dredged up by a fishing company and was given to a hobbyist.

He in turn contacted me for its identification, and has noted it's doing very well in his aquarium.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Cnidaria

    Class: Anthozoa

    Subclass: Octocorallia

    Order: Anlcyonacea

    Suborder: Holaxonia

    Family: Gorgoniidae

    Genus: Leptogorgia

FYI: Shown here only for identification only.

Needs a steady supply of plankton-like foodstuffs and should be kept in dim areas so as not to encourage algae growth.
