Family Milleporidae

Millepora alcicornis

Linnaeus, 1758

Bladed Fire Coral

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: Caribbean.

Natural Environment: Inhabits shallow coral reef areas, including lagoon, surf zones, bank reefs, patch reefs, and forereefs. Usually found in less than 100 foot (30 m) depths.

General Husbandry: Occasionally seen in the trade, however much thought needs to be given before placing this species in the average home aquarium as they grow quite fast under the right conditions and will encrust substrates/other corals near them.

In fact, it can chemically sense gorgonians, and will grow toward them, and when reaching them, completely encrust them/kill the gorgonian.

Hair-like structures called 'dactylozooids' containing stinging nematocysts, capture prey and transfer it to internal polyps.

Plankton-like foodstuffs are beneficial, which should be fed in evening hours, are not necessary in brightly lit aquariums.
