Real Reef Rock

Family Stichodactylidae

Heteractis malu

(Haddon & Shackleton, 1893)

Sebae Anemone, Hawaiian Anemone, White Sand Anemone

Not Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Japan south to Hawaiian Islands and further south to Australia.

Natural Environment: Lives singly in shallow sandy and gravel areas.

General Husbandry: Requires strong light and a deep fine sand substrate, >8 inches (20 cm). If it wanders in the aquarium it will destroy corals. Most clownfish do not like this anemone, and besides, it's difficult to maintain, with Hawaiian specimens probably the best choice.

Requires two or three weekly feedings of chopped fish meat, shrimp, mysis, bloodworms, mussels/clam meat, and/or squid.
