Family Thalassianthidae

Thalassianthus aster

Ruppell & Leuckart, 1828

Fuzzy-tipped Anemone, Lace-tipped Anemone

Not Reef Tank Suitable

Not Suitable for Fish-Only Tank

Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean.

Size: 2 inches (5 cm)

Natural Environment: Inhabits hard surfaces in reef rock areas.

General Husbandry: A pest anemone, similar to Majano/Aiptasia Anemones. It's a small, somewhat green/brownish anemone looking quite similar to a Rhodactis species mushroom anemone. They reproduce quickly, and like Aiptasia anemones, sting anything they touch, including your fingers. Mechanical removal, i.e., by hand, is the best way to eliminate them, as there are no natural predators that I know of. Often arrives as a hitchhiker on rock from Indonesia, or may be sometimes considered a desirable 'mushroom' anemone when seen on apiece of live rock. Much caution is advised here when it comes to this species!

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Cnidaria

    Class: Anthozoa

    Family: Thalassianthidae

    Genus: Thalassianthus
