Family Astriclypeidae

Echinodiscus auritus

(Leske, 1778)

Two-slit Sand Dollar, Pancake Sand Dollar

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean

Size: Size: 7 inches (18 cm)

Natural Environment: Inhabits sandy local shorelines.

Aquarium Suitability: Not collected for the aquarium trade, nor well suited for most home aquariums.

Feeds on detritus coated sand grains.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Echinodermata

    Class: Echinoides

    Order: Clypeasteroida

    Family: Astriclypeidae

    Genus: Echinodiscus

FYI: Should there be a desire to collect and maintain, needs a wide expanse of unimpeded sandy areas and a sand bed at least 3 inches (7 cm) deep, one that has sufficient amounts of detritus.

Can also be feed sinking shrimp/algae tablets that when dissolved, should be mixed into the sand.

There is some thought its genus name has been changed to Sculpsitechinua.

Triggerfish will eat these urchins.
