Family Cerianthidae

Cerianthus filiformis

Carlgren, 1924

Large Tube Anemone

Not Reef Tank Suitable

Not Suitable for Fish-Only Tank

Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Japan, South Korea, and Thailand.

Natural Environment: Often found in shallow rocky inshore areas that are subjected to gentle water currents and where mud and/or fine sand collects. Except for their tentacles which are used to capture live fishes and crustaceans, almost all of its tube-covered body is buried in the substrate.

Aquarium Suitability: Rarely available in the trade, which is a good thing as this is mostly a cool water species preferring temperatures about 60F (16C) and can get to about 2 feet (70 cm) in length with a tentacle spread of about 14 inches (35 cm), which makes it very capable of capturing even somewhat large fishes, which is its main source of food in the wild.

Not a desirable species for most reef or fish only aquariums.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Animalia

    Phylum: Cnidaria

    Class: Anthozoa

    Order: Spirularia

    Family: Cerianthidae

    Genus: Cerianthus
