Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Andaman Sea and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to Southern Japan, south to Rowely Shoals and New Caledonia.
Size: 5 inches (12 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabits lagoons, reef channels, outer reef faces and reef slopes rich in black corals, sea whips, gorgonians, and soft corals at depths between 40 to about 150 feet (12 – 45 m) and feeds on zooplankton.
General Husbandry: Somewhat common in the trade, as its quite attractive, basically having a yellowish body and fins, yet exhibits other color forms, e.g., yellow with blue and silver spots on the head and aft portion of the body; somewhat white with yellow on back and fins; and somewhat bluish with yellow on pelvic, anal and caudal peduncle.
Hardy, and easily adapts to general aquarium life in reef or fish-only aquariums, however, is a feisty species and should not be housed with timid tankmates.
As to diet, will eat most regular aquarium foods, e.g., live fortified brine shrimp and/or finely chopped various frozen or fresh meaty foods such as mysis, squid, fish flesh, shrimp, clam, etc, and plant material, e.g., flake foods, especially those containing Spirulina and should be offered several times daily.
