Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Cocos-Keeling east to Samoa, north to Southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island.
Size: 3 inches (8 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabits sheltered lagoons, reef flats, reef faces and fore-reef slopes at depths between 3 to about 150 feet (1 – 45 m) and mainly feeds on planktonic crustaceans (copepods, mysis, and shrimp larvae), fish eggs and algae.
General Husbandry: Occasionally seen in the trade, and one of the more peaceful and hardy members in this genus. Has a whitish body with a black vertical band just aft of the head and black edging on the dorsal, pelvic and anal fins. Depending upon areas of collection, some a pale second black vertical band near the tail.
As to diet, a meaty diet, e.g., live fortified brine shrimp and/or finely chopped various frozen or fresh meaty foods such as mysis, squid, fish flesh, shrimp, clam and plant material, e.g., flake foods, especially those containing Spirulina should be offered several times daily.
