Conger

Conger cinereus

Ruppell, 1830

Mustache Conger Eel, Longfin Conger Eel

Not Reef Tank Suitable

Not Suitable for Fish-Only Tank

Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Red Sea and East Africa to Marquesan and Easter Islands, north to Southern Japan and south to northern Australia.

Size: 50 inches (125 cm)

Natural Environment: Burrows into the sandy and muddy areas of reef flats and seagrass beds in shallow lagoons and is found between depths of about 3 to 200 feet (1 – 60 m) and feeds on small fishes and crustaceans in evening hours.

General Husbandry: Quite drab, having an overall brownish grey coloration. Not collected for the trade.

Taxonomy:

    Order: Anguilliformes

    Suborder: Congroidei

    Family: Congridae

    Subfamily: Congrinae

    Genus: Conger

FYI: Those in this genus are termed ‘Conger Eels’ and are quite shy/secretive, residing in rocky caves or buried in the sand or mud during the daytime, then feed at nighttime.

May require very deep substrates and/or large bottom located caves, as they are nocturnal bottom feeders and tankmates large enough not to be eaten.

Best displayed in ‘special species’ type aquariums/public aquarium displays.

Minimum decor is ideal, as they prefer wide-open bottom areas to search for food.

Shown here for identification only.
