These fishes belong in the Order Ophidiiformes and Suborder Bythitoidei, as members of the Family Bythitidae (livebearing brotulas), which contains 2 subfamilies, 31 genera, and about 90 species. They have elongated bodies and are quite secretive, and their favorite areas are caves and sinkholes. In the wild their main food is small crustaceans. Only one or two species are seen in the trade from time to time, and if placed in large aquariums, the aquarist may never see this fish again unless using a red light at nighttime to monitor its movements and feed the specimen!
