This is classified as a "Whelk" snail, and is in the family Nassariidae. They live buried in sand and emerge to eat foods high in protein, such as excess meaty fish foods and/or dead or dying animals.

Do not consume algae and should not exceed a few per square foot of sandbed surface. May be attacked and eaten by hermit crabs.
