These fishes belong in the Order Siluriformes as members of the Family Plotosidae (Eel Catfishes), which contains 9 genera and 32 species.
Only one of interest is found on coral reefs. The smaller the individual, the larger the schooling group. Larger specimens tend to keep to themselves.
