These fishes belong in the Order Perciformes and Suborder Percoidei as members of the Family Sciaenidae (Drums & Croakers) consisting of 10 subfamilies, 70 genera, and 270 species. Almost all drums/croakers, called that because of the sounds they make, are too large for the average aquarium. Yet, there are some that continue to show up in the trade and are well suited as juveniles in a peaceful aquarium setting. They are timid, nocturnal fishes, and during the day are found under deep ledges and coral outcrops. Their diet consists of snails, clams, and crustaceans. They should not be placed in aquariums with aggressive fishes.
